UPDATED: Turnpike crash victim ID’d

(Updated at 4:37 p.m.) PLYMOUTH — The eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Valley Forge and Norristown were reopened to traffic around 4 p.m. Monday. The eastbound side of the highway was shut down while police and emergency responders attended to victims of a crash involving a Turnpike work truck and a box truck. A Turnpike Commission employee, Michael R. Sanfelice, was killed in the crash. Two people had to be extricated from the box truck.

A Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission employee was killed, and two other people were critically injured early Monday morning, Oct. 22.  The crash, which involved a turnpike maintenance vehicle and a box truck, closed the turnpike for an extended period of time as state police investigated the crash. The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes just west of the Ridge Pike overpass. Three medical helicopters landed on the turnpike, one of which brought trauma surgeons in to the scene to assist in freeing two of the victims. (Photo by Tom Kelly IV/Daily Local News)<!–

          The office of state Rep. Mike Vereb gave a statement on behalf of the family of Turnpike crash victim Michael R. Sanfelice Monday afternoon. According to the statement, Sanfelice had been employed by the Turnpike Commission for 12 years, initially working as a mechanic and most recently working as part of the highway maintenance division.

              Sanfelice is survived by his wife Kathleen, to whom he was married for 43 years, and two daughters, Joy Ronan and her husband Jerry and Monica Spataccino and her husband John, as well as three grandchildren.

                  Sanfelice served as director of the Jefferson Fire Company since 1985 and as a member of the Frank C. Parker Jr. and Son American Legion Post 901, as well as the West Norriton Civil Service Commission.

                      Sanfelice was a U.S. Army veteran who had completed a tour of duty in Veitnam in 1966. He earned the Good Conduct, National Defense, Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign medals.
