Toronto Blue Jays crash to 1-4 defeat against Seattle Mariners – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were beaten by the Seattle Mariners 1-4 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Monday, July 30 in the opening game of their three match series.
Blue Jays made a decent start to the contest, thanks to Rajai Davis who homered to left in the first inning to put his side 1-0 ahead. John Jaso grounded into double play and Dustin Ackley scored to level the score 1-1 for the Mariners.
Kyle Seager had an RBI single to left in the first and shortstop Brendan Ryan reached first base safely on an error by third baseman Brett Lawrie as Mariners took complete control of the situation. Michael Saunders’ double to right in the fifth helped Seattle
end the game on a positive note.
Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Ricky Romero took his eighth loss of the season after he gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings. His counterpart from Seattle, Hisashi Iwakuma overcame a shaky start for his second win of the year. Overall, he gave up
just a run and four hits with 13 strike-outs in eight solid innings.
“I think overall, there was much more conviction and trust and belief in his stuff,” Toronto manager John Farrell said of Romero. “Evident by the first-pitch strikes; he used his fastball much more aggressively. Still not to the point where we’ve seen Ricky
pitch many times before, but I think this is a step in the right direction.”
“He was fantastic tonight,” Mariners’ Manager Eric Wedge said of Iwakuma. “We really needed him to step up. We were obviously very short in the bullpen tonight. For him to go eight strong innings against a very good-hitting ballclub, just a great performance.”
With their impressive win against the Blue Jays, the Mariners improved their record to 48-57. Riding on a five game win streak, Seattle still has a slim chance to make it to the playoffs.
Toronto, on the other hand, has not been at their best over the last couple of weeks. After taking the loss on Monday, John Farrell and company have moved to the bottom of the American League East Division standings.
