HOMELAND, Fla. — A car driven by a 14-year-old girl crashed in Polk County, Fla., killing the girl’s mother and a younger sister, police said.

Destiny Ensslin of Fort Meade was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt north on U.S. 17 about 20 miles south of Lakeland, Fla. when she drove into the path of a Dodge Caravan, the Tampa Bay (Fla.) Times reported Tuesday.

Police said the impact of the crash sent both vehicles into the path of a nearby Toyota Corolla.

Destiny was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where her condition was described as stable but critical.

Her mother, Dawn Ensslin, 42, a passenger in the front seat, was taken to a hospital where she later died.

Destiny’s 8-year-old sister Delaney, who was riding in the back seat of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the minivan and Corolla suffered only minor injuries.

Police said it was not clear why the 14-year-old was driving.
