Teen dies after crashing race car at Ocala track

A 15-year-old girl died Sunday after crashing her race car into a concrete barrier at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala.

Niokoa Johnson was the only driver on the track when she suddenly lost control of the Nissan Sentra during the second lap towards the north end of the track, according to Marion County deputies.

It was her first time behind the wheel on the racetrack, witnesses said.

“Tonight was her first race and she had been waiting for this night for a while and she was super excited and happy to be where she was,” her older sister, Nakiya, wrote on Bubba Raceway Park’s Facebook page Saturday.

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Niokoa died at 3 p.m. Sunday at a hospital in Gainesville.

“It is with a heavy heart that all of us from Bubba Raceway Park pass on our continued prayers and deepest condolences to the family of Niokoa Johnson who we have just learned has passed away as a result of the severe injuries she suffered in a traffic accident yesterday evening at Bubba Raceway Park,” the raceway park posted Sunday on Facebook. “Please keep Niokoa and her entire family in your prayers for strength and guidance during this difficult and sorrowful time.”
