A service has been set for Zachary Zajec, the third New Richmond, Wis., teenager to die as the result of a crash last week on Interstate 94.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Richmond. Visitation will be at the church one hour before the service and also from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cullen Crea Funeral Home in New Richmond.
Zajec, 17, died Monday at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. He had been in critical condition since the July 30 crash that killed two of his friends, Joshua Goodrich, 17, and Jordan Johnson, 16.
Another teen, Thomas Wanless, 17, was injured in the crash.
Zajec was driving the teens eastbound in a 2000 Dodge Durango about 1:20 p.m. when it rear-ended a semi. The semi had stopped due to traffic congestion caused by construction further east along the interstate, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
Zajec was an active member of the Boy Scouts and loved soccer and the outdoors, according to his obituary posted on cullencreafuneralhome.com. He planned to take mechanics courses at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in the fall.
