School bus, semi crash closes US 24 in both directions

WOODBURN, Ind. (WANE) An East Allen County school bus and semi crashed at the 16,000-block of U.S. 24 around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. U.S. 24 was closed for several hours in both directions while crews work on the scene.

The 16,000-block of U.S. 24 is about a mile northeast of the U.S. 24 exit off I-469 in Eastern Allen County.

According to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, a Fed-Ex semi heading eastbound on U.S. 24 hit the back of the school bus while it was stopped to let some children off. Officers on the scene did not know why the semi failed to stop.

East Allen County Schools (EACS) released a statement around 4:00 p.m. stating there were three reported non-serious injuries. EACS said the injured were being taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department told WANE that two children sustained minor injuries. WANE is working to clear the discrepancy on how many were injured.

27 children were on the bus when it crashed.

EACS also sent out a document outlining procedures for when a school bus crashes.
