Mount Dora man dies in hit-and-run crash

A 78-year-old Mount Dora man is dead after the car he was riding in along U.S. Highway 441 was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say William Tschida died Tuesday at Orlando Regional Medical Center 10 days after being involved in an early-morning crash on March 8. Trooper say William Tschida was a passenger with Shirley Tschida, 77, in a 2008 Lincoln Town Car. The two were headed south about 8:30 a.m. in the left lane on U.S. 441 near West Ponkan Road in Zellwood.

Directly behind them was a pickup truck driven by an unidentified person. Shirley Tschida – who was driving the Lincoln – moved into the right lane at the same time as the pickup.

Troopers say the front right of the truck struck the back left of the Lincoln, causing the car to spin off the road. The car moved down the embankment onto the right shoulder and overturned once. The driver of the truck fled the scene. Witnesses say the truck was tan or grey.

Anyone with information is asked to call troopers at 407-737-2213 or Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
