A fatal crash had traffic stopped in both directions on I-69 in Windsor Township until early Tuesday morning.
The victim has been identified as 53-year-old George Comrie of Charolette. Comrie’s wife was in the driver’s seat when the car was struck. Four other people were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Five vehicles and a semi-truck were involved in the crash that happened around 5p.m. on Monday.
Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputy Jody Mann was able to pull an unconscious man to safety from a burning car after the crash. “I’m pretty confident he might have burned if Deputy Mann wasn’t on the scene and saved him from the car,” Undersheriff Fred McPhail said.
The driver of the semi failed to stop with traffic, which was backed up due to another accident involving a van pulling a pop-up camper that rolled over into the median.
The semi-driver slammed into the back of Comrie’s car, then swerved into the median, damaging four other vehicles.
“It could have been a lot worse if he hadn’t had swerved,” McPhail said.
No formal charges have been filed.
