TAMPA –
A Wesley Chapel man was killed after his car was struck head-on by another car going the wrong way on Interstate 275 downtown early Thursday, troopers said.
William Brooks Angel, 20, died after his 2000 Ford Mustang collided with a 2012 Ford Fusion driven by Christopher Ponce, 22, of Tampa, troopers said.
The crash happened at 2:49 a.m., when Ponce’s Fusion was traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-275, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Fusion hit Angel’s Mustang, which was traveling north in the center lane, approaching the Interstate 4 interchange, Gaskins said.
Ponce was taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.
Two passengers in the Mustang, Robert Patrick Newberry, 22, of Lutz, and Jay Davis, 20, of Wesley Chapel, were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital serious injuries.
No one involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, according to a highway patrol report.
Northbound I-275 downtown was closed about four hours after the collision while troopers investigated and debris was cleared.
