Man dies after crashing into tree in west end

One man is dead after crashing his car into a tree in west Ottawa Wednesday afternoon.

Ottawa paramedics said they were called to Cavan Street near Raven Avenue around 4:10 p.m.

They said they were unable to treat the only person inside, a 49-year-old man, until fire crews could cut open the car.

Once they were able to access the victim, paramedics said he was declared dead at the scene. It took them several hours before they could remove his body from the car.

Neighbours said they could hear the crash from blocks away.

“I thought it was the watermain crew, but the impact was so loud it ricocheted off the buildings at the top of Caldwell (Avenue),” said Erin Albright. “It sounded like an explosion.”

Ottawa police are investigating the crash and closed Caven Street between Raven Avenue and Larose Avenue for a few hours.

“He was travelling northbound on Cavan (Street), and for some unknown reason the vehicle travelled onto the curb and struck the tree,” aid Sgt. William Murrell of the Ottawa police.

“It was seen speeding . . . just prior to the collision.”
