I-81 north closed for fatal motorcycle crash near Fort Indiantown Gap

A truck driver fled the scene after fatally striking a motorcyclist on Interstate 81 in Lebanon County, according to state police in Jonestown.

Police said the motorcyclist, 46-year-old Mark Shaughness of Woodbine, Md., lost control of his 2007 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 in the northbound lanes of I-81 at mile marker 87 in East Hanover Township, about two miles north of the Fort Indiantown Gap exit.

Shaughness slid into the middle of the roadway after falling from the Kawasaki and was run over by the tractor-trailer at around 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer initially stopped, but fled when he found out that he had run over the motorcyclist, police said.

Shaughness was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they’re looking for a black male with gray hair who’s about 50 years old and was wearing a safety vest. The tractor-trailer of unknown make and model was hauling a semi trailer.

The crash closed I-81 North between Exit 85A in East Hanover Township and Exit 89 for Interstate 78 for about four hours.

The roadway reopened at around 1:30 p.m.
