Southbound I-75 has reopened between Bee Ridge Road and State Road 70 due to a crash involving 47 vehicles, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. on the overpass at University Parkway, on the Manatee/Sarasota County line.
The latest information from the Florida Highway Patrol is that two people have been airlifted and 52 patients were transported with non life-threatening injuries.
The Sarasota County Fire Department has 18 units on scene with Manatee and Charlotte counties also providing assistance. The Red Cross has also been dispatched to the scene to assist rescue workers.
A tanker may be leaking liquid calcium, which is not considered hazardous, according to the sheriff’s office.
A small but strong storm in the area at the time may have contributed to the cause of the accident, according to our Tampa news partner WTSP 10.
