A 25-year-old Hernando man is in serious condition at Florida Hospital in Zephyrhills following a three-vehicle crash on I-75 at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Pasco County.
The Florida Highway Patrol says that another driver, Aria Karina Curad Mallari, 17, of Largo was seriously injured during the accident, and later died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
The FHP says that Mallari’s 2008 Honda Civic, traveling southbound, somehow crossed the median and into the northbound traffic lanes, when her vehicle traveled into the path of Mansifield’s 2012 Chevy pickup truck. His truck struck the Honda’s left side, which caused the truck to cartwheel.
His truck was then struck on the right side by a 2000 Ford Ranger being driven by Christine L. Penner, 46, of Largo, who was only slightly injured in the accident and did not require hospitalization, the FHP said.
The Honda split in two after the accident and caught fire, the FHP said.
The accident remains under investigation, the FHP says.
