As she stepped onto Waterford Chase Parkway to get to her school bus stop near the Waterford Chase Recreational Park, the girl was struck by a red Kia Sportage driven by 54-year-old Richard Alexander of Orlando.

“The driver told us that girl suddenly ran out in front of him,” Montes said. “We don’t believe she was in the crosswalk based upon where she was hit. The driver was not going very fast based upon where he ended up stopping.”

The hood of the Kia was dented when the girl’s body hit the SUV and her shoes were left behind on Waterford Chase Parkway.

Alexander stopped immediately and tried to help the girl as other bystanders called 911.

He told troopers he never saw the teenager in the dark road.

Waterford Chase Parkway is a heavily traveled road that many people use to get from east Orange County to State Road 408, Montes said. It also a busy road for child pedestrians headed to bus stops.

FHP is investigating.
