ST. GEORGE – A motorcycle accident occurred on I-15 Thursday afternoon.

Cpl. Todd Johnson of the Utah Highway Patrol said that at 2:25 p.m., a male motorcyclist crashed at milepost 8 while traveling north. Witnesses stated the motorcycle went off the left shoulder, into the median and hit the cable barrier. The rider’s condition at the time was described by Johnson as “extremely critical.”

Investigators said there was a motorcycle helmet at the scene of the crash, but it is believed at this point that the rider was not wearing the helmet, and that it may have been attached to the motorcycle instead.

The rider passed away while being transported to the hospital around 3:20 p.m.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-15 were initially closed, though reopen soon after. However, the left lane of I-15 northbound remained closed until just after 4 p.m.

Accident is currently under investigation.
