Eastbound I-196 reopens after deadly crash

UPDATE AT 7:05 P.M. (WZZM) — Michigan State Police have reopened eastbound I-196 near Market Avenue following a deadly crash.

The eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed for almost three hours while troopers investigated the accident.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) – A serious accident has shut down eastbound I-196 near Market Avenue.  It happened around 4 p.m. Monday.

Michigan State Police tell WZZM 13 a red car was headed westbound when the driver crossed over the median and into the eastbound lanes of the freeway.

The red car struck a burgundy van head-on. The driver of the red car was killed and the driver of the van is injured but expected to recover.

Eastbound traffic on I-196 is backed up beyond Chicago Drive, drivers are asked to avoid the area.
