Driver, 89, killed when minivan goes out of control

An 89-year-old Fruitland Park man was killed Monday when he lost control of his minivan as he backed out of a parking space and crashed on U.S. Highway 27 in Leesburg, police said.

Dewey Huffman was backing out of a space at Walgreens, 2010 N. Citrus Blvd. in Leesburg about 3:25 p.m. when his burgundy 2007 Chrysler minivan accelerated quickly, hit a parked vehicle and crossed all six lanes of the highway, striking a sign pole, officers said.

Huffman’s wife was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

All lanes of U.S. 27 were closed for about two hours while officers investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

Capt. Rob Hicks, a police spokesman, said it was too early Monday to determine what caused the minivan to accelerate.
