Talk about it
Commuters to the Twin Cities were delayed in Hudson Tuesday morning by a crash on the westbound I-94 bridge over the St. Croix River.
Authorities closed all but the left lane on the bridge, resulting in a traffic backup of several miles into Wisconsin.
The westbound freeway on-ramp at Exit 1 in Hudson was closed, too, leading to traffic jams in the city as vehicles were directed to the Coulee Road on-ramp at 13th Street.
At 8 a.m., the Wisconsin State Patrol was expecting the backup to last for two hours.
The Exit 1 (Hwy. 35) on-ramp was reopened at about 8:45 p.m. and police were reporting that two westbound lanes of the bridge were open. Minutes later, all the westbound lanes were reported to be open.
The crash on the bridge involved a Saturn car and a Town and Country minivan, according to a report on police radio.
A passerby said that a large pickup truck also was involved. The pickup was sideways in the westbound lanes near the Bayport exit and firefighters had removed the doors to free passengers, the witness said.
The witness said at least two other passenger cars appeared to be damaged.
At least one patient was transported to Lakeview Hospital at Stillwater.
At 8:55 a.m., Hudson police were dispatched to a second accident in the city on Coulee Road at Colonial Drive.
Coulee Road was congested, too, as drivers attempted to use that street to get onto I-94.
At 9 a.m., the Wisconsin State Patrol was still reporting westbound traffic on I-94 at a standstill at one point in Wisconsin.
Commuter traffic through Hudson on I-94 is heavier than usual because of the closure of the Stillwater Lift Bridge for repairs.
