Chicago train operator ‘dozed off’ before crash at O’Hare

CHICAGO (AP) — Federal officials said Wednesday that the operator of a train that crashed into an escalator at O’Hare International Airport “dozed off” before the train entered the underground station.

An investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board said the operator woke up when the train jumped off the tracks and hit the escalator early Monday.

He said the woman also admitted she had fallen asleep on the job in February, partially missing a station.

Monday’s crash happened around 3 a.m., injuring more than 30 people. Crews Wednesday are cutting apart the lead car of the eight-car train.
