Another interstate mess: 53 vehicles involved in I-10 crashes

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — More than a dozen people were injured in several crashes Friday night along Interstate 10 in Jacksonville.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said they investigated 20 crashes involving 53 vehicles along a 4-mile stretch Friday. Eighteen people were taken to area hospitals. Most of the accidents involved minor damage. Some of the victim’s injuries were listed as serious.

Interstate 10 was closed in both directions for several hours.

Authorities said heavy rains played a role in the accidents.

A similar pileup also occurred on Florida’s west coast Friday, where heavy rains were a factor in 12 separate crashes.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that 52 people were hurt in the accidents along southbound I-75. Twenty-two people were taken to hospitals, including two who were critically injured.
