A van and small sedan collided in the 2100 block of Wolf Road just before 8:30 a.m. this morning (Wednesday) shutting down traffic in both directions and sending several patients to area hospitals.

Firefighters and paramedics responding to the scene, and realizing how many passengers may have been injured, called for an ambulance box alarm which brought in additional paramedics from Des Plaines, Rosemont, Park Ridge, Rolling Meadows and Schiller Park, Des Plaines Fire Chief Alan Wax told reporters at the scene.

Four victims were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Wolf Road between Howard and Touhy was reopened by 9:10 a.m.

Wax said firefighters extricated one crash victim from a gray Chevy Malibu. He described it as a minor extrication using pry bars and other hand tools rather than removing pieces of the car with heavier equipment.

The Malibu sustained major front-end damage while a yellow Stanley Steamer van towed from the scene appeared to sustain minor damage.

Police officers at the scene referred questions from reporters to upper-level commanders.
