Florida Highway Patrol officials said they investigated 20 crashes involving 53 vehicles along a four-mile stretch on Friday. Eighteen people were taken to area hospitals. Most of the accident involved only minor damage. Some of the victim’s injuries were listed as serious.
Interstate 10 was closed in both directions for several hours.
Authorities said heavy rains played a role in the accidents.
A similar pile-up also occurred on Florida’s west coast Friday where heavy rains were a factor in 12 separate crashes.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that 52 people were hurt in the accidents along southbound Interstate 75. Twenty-two persons were taken to area hospitals, including two people who were critically injured.
