1 dead, 4 injured after SUV crashes into tree in Union County

A 1994 Toyota 4Runner was traveling west on Highway 176 near Tinker Creek Road at 2:24 p.m. when the driver veered off the left side of the roadway, traveled down an embankment and struck a tree, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Miller said the driver was killed in the crash and four passengers, including one juvenile, were hospitalized.

Passengers Shannon Rachel Barber, 28, and Paul David Thomas, 40, both of Union, were injured and taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by ambulance. The unidentified juvenile was flown by helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Brandi Julie Northern, 26, of Union, was flown by helicopter to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released, and further details regarding the cause of the crash were not available Monday night. The crash remains under investigation.
